💡 The workplace is changing — how to help kids be ready

In the next 5-10 years, the workplace will change more than it did in the last 100 years — billions of people will need to be upskilled.

Why it matters: Schools are still preparing kids for jobs that no longer exist, let alone preparing kids for the ones that don’t yet exist.

A new world: The internet age has dramatically increased access to knowledge — so why are still asking kids to memorize knowledge when they can access any information with a single Google search?

Do this instead: Instead of content knowledge, kids need to

  • learn how to process and analyze large amounts of information, and

  • be taught how to apply facts and ideas to complex problems.

Looking ahead: The ways kids learn (and what they learn) must be transformed — otherwise, employers will just have to upskill every high school and college graduate as soon as they get hired.

How to help your kids land an amazing internship

The best way to help your kids get ahead is by getting them real-world experience through building their own projects or landing an internship.

Why it matters: Every summer, kids reach out to busy individuals with the hope of landing an internship — and get ignored.

Think smart: If you really want to increase your kids’ odds of landing that dream role, they need to do their due diligence first.

  • It’s human nature to want to reciprocate — in social psychology, reciprocity is the social norm of rewarding kind actions with other positive actions.

  • Take advantage of this by having your kid create something of real value for the company.

Try this: Say your kid wants to land a marketing internship. Instead of having them reach out to the Head of Marketing asking for a call, have them do this:

  • Study the company’s marketing. Find what they’re missing. Then go build that. Maybe their Twitter account is underperforming because they’re not writing enough threads, or you think the company could do well on TikTok.

Why it works: Doing this shows a company that your kid already understands the role and is ready to create value. It also shows your kid is willing to go the extra mile — and in the sea of cover letters and resumes, that extra effort really stands out.

The takeaway: To land an internship, it’s no longer enough to throw your resume into the hat. To get the dream role, your kids will need to lead with value.

The 8 startup roles teens can apply for — right now

Which internships are the best ones for your kids to apply for? Which ones will set them up with the skills they need to be successful later on?

Why it matters: Not all internship opportunities are created equal — your kids should choose an internship that will help them get closer to their goals.

Try this: I put together a guide on the 8 startup roles teens can apply for (and I know this because our own students have gotten internships in these positions!)
