💡 1 Valuable Lesson They Don’t Teach You In School

“Loneliness kills. It’s as powerful as smoking or alcoholism.”

That powerful line is from Harvard’s Study of Adult Development, the world’s longest running study on happiness.

School rightly teaches kids about the harm things like smoking, drinking, and other such vices will cause them. Unfortunately, schools don’t teach kids the one thing that will harm them just as much over the course of their lives: the absence of strong relationships.

Here are a few valuable lessons from the study you can teach your kids today:

  • Time with loved ones has a strong correlation with overall wellbeing.

  • Quality of relationships is more important than quantity of relationships - it’s more important to have close friends than it is to be popular.

  • Altruism and helping those in need is a good predictor of our wellbeing and quality of relationships.

  • Lifestyle has a significant impact on wellbeing - those who were physically active, had low body weight, and avoided cigarettes and alcohol were generally happier compared to their peers.

  • The most important lesson: close relationships are the strongest predictor of happiness ― even more so than social class, IQ, fame, money, or even genes. The folks most satisfied with their relationships at 50, were also the healthiest at age 80.
